Complex Traumatic Stress

Responses to chronic interpersonal violence exposure, particularly during sensitive developmental periods, often include a wide range of more broad and severe symptoms in addition to PTSD symptoms. These symptoms often include difficulties with emotion regulation and distress tolerance, as well as self-harming behaviors, dissociation, and somatic concerns. In general, professionals and trainees may receive very little formal trauma training, and even less training in appropriate treatment approaches to assist clients with complex trauma, leaving them feeling insufficiently prepared to effectively address the needs of these individuals.

This workshop will focus on: Increasing participants’ awareness of the unique trauma-related symptoms associated with chronic interpersonal violence exposure, particularly during sensitive developmental periods, helping them identify their clients’ immediate and long-term trauma-related needs, selecting and utilizing safe, practical, evidence-based/evidence-informed treatment approaches, and building and practicing creative skills to help clients adjust and thrive. Demonstrations and role plays will be included to assist participants in observing and practicing effective therapy approaches to use with these clients. Participants will gain the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to work confidently and effectively with adults who have complex trauma presentations.
