Day 2 – Working with Cycles of Unsafe Behavior and Internal Conflict
Presented by Dr. Ruth Lanius & Dr. Bethany Brand
Clients with histories of complex trauma often find themselves caught in painful, repetitive cycles—returning to unsafe relationships or engaging in self-defeating behaviors that seem at odds with their desire for healing. These patterns often reflect deeply ingrained survival strategies rooted in abusive or neglectful caregivers.
On Day 2, join Dr. Bethany Brand and Dr. Ruth Lanius as they delve into how to compassionately engage the internal systems driving these behaviors.
You’ll learn to:
Recognize and validate the function of conflicting parts—including those compelled to please abusers, parts that enact self-punishment for resistance, and the adult self that feels overwhelmed.
Work with internal conflict
Support clients in affirming their right to safety while honoring the protective intentions behind even the most harmful-seeming behaviors.
Ideal for clinicians working with complex trauma, dissociation, or relational reenactments.
Demonstrate how to use “Where self” with highly depersonalized clients.
Use the Finding Solid Ground program to help overwhelmed or stuck clients begin stabilizing with present-focused tools.
Apply Finding Solid Ground tools to help clients who struggle to get grounded.
Demonstrate the ability to find one's own solid ground while working with severely dissociative clients.
